Wow, it's weird out here. My head is spinning trying to figure out all the implications. I'm a firm believer in spring cleaning. I set aside a few week-end days in May for it. I move furniture and wipe down baseboards, I clean the hot tub, I clean the outdoor furniture and reseal it with linseed oil, I oil our soapstone counters and the wooden cutting boards and handles. So a guy goes to the emergency room and says he's been in Liberia, he's scared he has ebola. And the emergency room sends him home with antibiotics for a viral disease.

Yep. That's pretty much exactly what I told my husband would happen.

We were out for a walk on the island yesterday and I noted that there were a lot of cars on the island, lots of activity outside houses, and people were pulling boats out of the water.  We watched the harbormaster escort in a whopping big Coast Guard vessel - I don't know what you call it when it's that big.   I hadn't realized how big it was until ( Read more... )

I've been reading up on the expected impact of climate change in our area and the island.  Mostly I've been untroubled by this; warmer winters don't trouble me particularly, although I'll be sorry to see the sugar maples leave our hillsides.  The pests have already destroyed my stand of five hemlocks, they can't do much worse to me now.  The longer ( Read more... )
